A man who was seriously injured by a forklift at work, resulting in his lower leg being amputated, has received a substantial compensation settlement.
The man, who was in his sixties, was helping to move poultry into a freezer. His leg was caught by a forklift as it backed into him. The driver tried to move away from him but accidentally reversed, trapping his leg under the forklift until the vehicle could be moved with the help of another forklift.
He was taken to hospital, where attempts were made to reconstruct his foot and graft skin, but sadly these were unsuccessful. Facing the prospect of being dependent on a wheelchair and experiencing ongoing pain, he made the decision to have his lower leg amputated, in the hope that he could resume an active lifestyle. He then underwent months of intensive rehabilitation and was fitted with a prosthetic.
After he brought a personal injury claim, liability was admitted and interim payments were secured to meet the costs of suitable accommodation and his rehabilitation. With this support, he was able to start walking his dog again and help his wife to look after their granddaughter. A settlement of his claim was subsequently agreed and he received substantial damages.
